Mounting a picture on a drywall

What should I use to hang items up on plaster walls?

Are you hanging up your pictures up on a plaster wall?
Below you will find some tips about what to think of so that you can hang your pictures up in the best possible way.

We sell several types of picture hangers for plaster walls - X-hooks and different variations of screws with accompanying plugs. Everything depends on how heavy the picture you are going to hang up is. There are many different kinds of plaster wall, and it is hard to say which kind of picture hanger works best for your precise wall and picture. Generally, however, you could say that an X-hook works better for lighter pictures, while screws and plugs work better for heavier pictures.

What should I think of before I hang my picture?

It's best to make sure that you have everything you need before you begin. Measure the place where the picture is going to hang, and make a little mark with a pencil on the wall, so that you can easily see where you're going to put the fixings. The very best thing to do is use a spirit level, so that everything is straight and neat!

Hang pictures up with an X-hook for plaster wall

An X-hook is a hook with accompanying pins, and it works for hanging up pictures on wooden or plaster walls. It is a common and quick way of hanging up pictures on, for example, plaster walls which it is possible to hammer into. X-hooks come in several different sizes, and are best suited to lighter pictures. An X-hook holds loads of up to 5 kilograms.

Do it like this:

  • Measure where the picture is going to sit.
  • Be sure to measure where the hook will end up when you hang the picture on it, and not where the pins meet the wall, so the picture will end up where you intend it to be.
  • Hammer in the pins so that they slope downwards into the hole of the hook. By hammering them in at an angle, you will give the hook the best load capacity.
  • Hang the picture on the hook!

Hang pictures up with screws and plugs on plaster walls

If the picture you are going to hang on a plaster wall is a little heavier, we recommend that you use screws and plugs or metal expanders. You will need to drill, and the holes will be bigger, but the picture will hang properly and there won't be a risk of it falling down. If you don't have a drill, you can use a self-drilling plug with screw. An ordinary screw with plug can, roughly speaking, hold a load of up to 15 kilograms.

You can hang your picture directly on the screw. When the picture is hung up, it should not sit loose, but instead, sit tight against the wall. If you use fixings with steel wire, wire or cables, you may need to cut them in order for the picture to hang closer to the wall.

Do it like this with screws and plugs:

  • Measure where the picture is going to sit.
  • When you use screws and plugs to hang up a picture on a plaster wall, you will need to drill beforehand a hole in the plasterboard which is the same width and length as the plug. Drill the hole so that it's possible to push the plug all the way in.
  • Then, put in the screw using either the drill or a screwdriver. The screw should sit almost all the way into the wall.

Do it like this with self-drilling plugs:

  • Measure where the picture is going to sit.
  • When you use self-drilling screws with plugs, you don't need to drill into the plasterboard beforehand. The idea with this solution is that the plug will bite into the board when it is screwed in.
  • Then, put in the screw using either the drill or a screwdriver. The screw should sit almost all the way into the wall, so that you have something to hang your picture on.
