Of course, how your gallery wall looks is completely up to you, but there are some simple guidelines to follow to help the pieces harmonize. We'll start with some tips on how to make the installation process as smooth as possible.
How to Get Started

Lay out the frames and wall decor on the floor and arrange them exactly how you want them to hang on the wall. Take a picture of your layout to use as a guide. Now, let's move to the wall. The easiest way to get straight lines is to use a laser level, but you can, of course, also measure with a string secured to the wall with a thumbtack. Always use screws or nails that are compatible with your wall material. A wood wall can often take nails, while a drywall or concrete wall needs screws with the appropriate wall anchors.
The Structured Look
One of the most common approaches is to arrange the art in horizontal lines. Decide whether you want a straight line along the top or bottom edges of the frames, or if you prefer the line to run through the center of the pieces. This method works best for medium or large groupings. The result is organized, symmetrical, and stylish!
For a different approach, you can arrange the pieces in a creative, eye-catching shape. Here, you can mix frames of varying sizes that together form a balanced pattern. For a cohesive look, choose frames in the same color, but feel free to experiment with different frame styles. A similar method involves creating a square or rectangular gallery wall with frames in the same color. For this, you should stick to rectangular or square frames, as they look fantastic within the larger shape. The outer contour should be straight, but within the square or rectangle, you can decide on the best spacing between each frame. A square or rectangular layout works equally well regardless of the overall size.
Satisfyingly messy
For a dynamic look, there's a really fun alternative that requires a bit more planning. The technique is to mix different art, frames in various colors and shapes, and other wall decor to create order out of chaos. It looks best if you hang the pieces along straight, vertical lines and ensure they are placed symmetrically. You can also place frames of the same shape at a consistent distance from each other. A round or oval piece of decor should be hung in the center of the negative space. It's even better if you follow a theme, depending on whether you're placing the dynamic gallery wall in a kitchen or a child's room, for example. Keep in mind that varied shapes often require a large wall.
Make It Easy on Yourself

Finally, a tip for those who aren't fans of planning, measuring, and drilling: use a picture ledge! A picture ledge
does, of course, require a little work to install. But after that, you can quickly and easily swap out your posters, photographs, and decorations without having to redesign the whole wall. A rule of thumb to make this look as good as possible is to hang the picture ledges with even spacing and align them along the outer edges. Choose picture ledges in the same color and make sure they match the wall's color scheme.
Combine modern posters, photographs, old tickets, candle holders, and mirrors in your gallery wall. The charm is that you can gather all your favorite wall decor and create a beautiful, cohesive display with them.
Good luck!
